This paper analyzes tombstones depicting mothers and children from the Roman period in the territory of present-day Herzegovina. Special attention is given to the role of women and children in funerary inscriptions, as well as to family relations in general. In this context, sepulchral monuments from several microregions, such as the area of eastern Herzegovina, the Trebižat valley and the Upper Neretva area were analyzed. The monuments discovered in these regions display certain specific features concerning women and children in commemorative practices. In addition, epithets are discussed as one of the common features found on epigraphic monuments throughout Herzegovina.
